Heeeere's the Center of our Galaxy!

Peering into the Galactic Center:

A dramatic new vista of the center of the Milky Way galaxy from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory exposes new levels of the complexity and intrigue in the Galactic center. The mosaic of 88 Chandra pointings represents a freeze-frame of the spectacle of stellar evolution, from bright young stars to black holes, in a crowded, hostile environment dominated by a central, supermassive black hole.

Jumping Robots Will Freak You Out

Now the Robots are HOPPING MAD! This is kinda scary......
Sandia National Labs and Boston Dynamics made this cute little jumping robot.

An overall goal of the robots is to decrease the number of casu alties in combat. To that end, the hopping robots will provide enhanced situational awareness for shaping the outcome of the immediate local combat situation, Salton said. Their compact, lightweight design makes them portable, and their semiautonomous capability greatly reduces the workload burden of the operator.
In addition to providing military assistance, the hopping capabilities of the robots could be used in law enforcement, homeland security, search and rescue applications in challenging terrain and in planetary exploration, [Jon Salton, Sandia program manager] said.

Just Another 9/11 in NYC

Sadly, it's become routine here in NY - families of the murdered huddle at "Ground Zero" (which will be left as a construction site in perpetuity, evidently), while the rest of us go to work as normal...yet we all know there is no normal. On 9/10/01 we were asleep, we woke up for a while, and now have hit the snooze button.

We here in NYC think about that day in a special way, and it might be hard to understand if you don't live here, unless you were visiting on 9/11/01. The horrors we felt and shared still feels remarkably local.

Crazy to think what the country's been through since, with the crazy rightwing semi-literate president and his henchmen, then electing a brilliant thinker and writer, only to have things dumbed down by the crazy right again, and the weak Democrats.

The USA seems to be divided into 2 USA's - again. This time the names of the sides are "Fear" and "Loathing". Pick one.

How about we abolish Nationalism, Patriotism, Religious Ferver and Greed?

(oh, and abolish all Political Contributions and PACS!)

09.09.09 Wednesday is/was Triple Digits Day!

Fittingly enough for a date with triplicate digits, there are reasons why this date is noteworthy.

This is the last of the single-digit triple-number days. There will be a few more dates that repeat numbers three times, ending with 12 December ‘12, but there’s something so very aesthetic about single digits, and after today there will be no more within our lifetimes.

Our advice is to take no chances today. Remain indoors and stay calm. Read your Darwin. Contemplate the meaning of life. And be of good cheer. Remember the optimism of Miss Scarlet, who famously said: “Tomorrow is another day!”

Oh, in case you’re wondering what this has to do with “The Controversy” between evolution and creationism, the answer is … nothing. Nothing at all.

Happy triple-nines day!

Cartoon about Health Insurance Reform

This cartoon offers up a very simple, rational explanation of how our current health care system works and how the public option, and eventually a universal system, would ultimately benefit us. Thanks to Andy Lubershane!
