New Rule: with Bill Maher
New Rule: The next rich person who publicly complains about being vilified by the Obama administration must be publicly vilified by the Obama administration. It's so hard for one person to tell another person what constitutes being "rich", or what tax rate is "too much." But I've done some math that indicates that, considering the hole this country is in, if you are earning more than a million dollars a year and are complaining about a 3.6% tax increase, then you are by definition a greedy asshole. The world’s smallest stop-motion animation character: Dot.
Professor Fletcher’s invention of the CellScope, which is a Nokia device with a microscope attachment, was the inspiration for a teeny-tiny film created by Sumo Science at Aardman. It stars a 9mm girl called Dot as she struggles through a microscopic world. All the minuscule detail was shot using CellScope technology and a Nokia N8, with its 12 megapixel camera and Carl Zeiss optics. SEE THE awesome VIDEO!

great post from Brady Bonk, Ketchup is A Vegetable:
Every time I hear one of these TP wackadoodles talk about how we need to lessen the reach of the federal government and how the federal government is only supposed to provide an army or whatnot, I can’t help but wonder what the hell history classes they had growing up. Because one of the first lessons I think you ever learn once you start studying history is that, guess what, buttmunch, this notion of a strictly limited federal government and then the states individually get to decide everything else? WE TRIED THAT ALREADY. IT DIDN’T WORK. READ all about it....(thanks, KIAV!)

Wisdom from Driftglass
Someone once said that there are only two kinds of Republicans; millionaires and chumps.
But there is a third kind: self-loathing minority group outliers who are willing to sell their own people to the wingnut mob in exchange for 30 pieces of silver and a pat on the head from people who hate them.
(thanks, Driftglass! I was just thinkin the same thang)

State Lotteries: Revenue from the Poor & stupid
The Poor Tax: I find it so sad to see those with no money to waste, spending on
state lotteries. Most players seem to be lower socioeconomic classes, so they are the only ones that pay this tax. Their kids need shoes, clothes, proper food, yet the state advertises the Million$ they could win. I guess the states need the money and the poor are happy to pay it. Now lets cut those taxes for the rich folk and
major corporations. I feel so sorry for them.

Defeat the Right in Three Minutes
It's evidently all about Cheap Labor!
Have you got three minutes. Because that's all you need to learn how to defeat the Republican Right. Just read through this handy guide and you'll have everything you need to successfully debunk right-wing propaganda.
It's really that simple. First, you have to beat their ideology, which really isn't that difficult. At bottom, conservatives believe in a social hierarchy of "haves" and "have nots" that I call "corporate feudalism". They have taken this corrosive social vision and dressed it up with a "respectable" sounding ideology. That ideology is pure hogwash, and you can prove it. READ IT HERE. (thanks, ConceptualGorilla!)

Self Employment TAX?? WTF
hey what's the deal with the "self-employment tax"?? can we please ditch this?
I'm not talkin about INCOME earned through self employment (freelance), but the 15% off the top.....then to tax the actual income....why aren't those taxhaters freakin out about this?
Anyone know if other countries have such a ridiculous thing? Who came up with this and can we throw stuff at them in public? I'm no teabagger and have no problem payin lots in tax & getting lots of groovy things in return, but if you say it out loud it sounds sick and twisted.....let's say it out loud...SELF - EMPLOYMENT.....TAX. see? WTF?

Unemployment Insurance PAID for!
(from Ketchup Is A Vegetable)
Here’s what I don’t understand about what’s not being said regarding the Senate’s asshole behavior on the unemployment extention.
If you work, your employer is required to pay state and federal payroll taxes into unemployment on your behalf. This expense is based on your earnings. These benefits are included as part of your gross income for consideration by the Internal Revenue Service.
We’re not talking about handouts when we’re talking about unemployment insurance. We’re talking about a legitimate benefit that people pay for through their working lives. The Senate is denying people a benefit they’ve already paid for. These assholes are stealing from you. Again. Dig?
Why isn’t anyone saying this, anyway? (other than thebassguy, that is! thanks, Brady Bonk and KIAV!)

Tanning Tax goes into Effect! World Ends.
OMFG, there's a new tax of 10% on Indoor Tanning sessions! (oh, the humanity!!)
I wonder if the tax even begins to cover those uninsured tanners who are treated for Melanoma....I can't believe the rightwingnutz are upset over this tax. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer and current research shows indoor tanners are 74 percent more likely to get it than non-tanners.
And yet Billions-Per-Month-for-War is just fine n dandy. Oy.

Tax is Government Theft??
GREAT POST found on WaPo comments:
So taxation is stealing. Well, good, let's stop stealing (because that is really wrong, we know that). Once the stealing has ceased we can shut down the federal government, the military and all related industries, the public schools, the entire transportation infrastructure (especially all of those costly roads, pesky signs, and troublesome stoplights) the banking and financial regulatory system, police, fire, and water services, R&D on anything from infectious diseases to military defense, stop all medicare and medicaid spending and funding, eliminate social security, eliminate air traffic control, eliminate all building and electrical codes, sanitation services of any type --water, garbage, and so on. Of course we need to shut down civil and air defenses as well. Fire all state and federal employees. Eliminate workmen's comp and unemployment benefits. Do away with all rail service. Eliminate food inspectors. Do away with clean water regulations. Eliminate limits on industries that pollute, including those who spew toxic chemicals into the air and streams and, what the heck, why worry about radioactive meltdowns at nuclear regulators. Of course we'll need to eliminate all subsidies to any person, small business or large corporation. Do away with student loan and grant programs. And, of course all those damn food stamps that are just bankrupting the country.
After that, we can ll just pass the plate around at Church and act charitably..
Wow, what a great place it would be to live. I can't wait.
(Thanks, baileyj!)

Corporate Taxes...Boo Frickin Hoo
This is essentially what the corporations actually pay in taxes.
(bupkis)
Here’s a story from Think Progress that confirms what I’ve been saying: many corporations pay zero taxes, their effective tax rate is zero.
Last week, Forbes magazine published what the top U.S. corporations paid in taxes last year. “Most egregious,” Forbes notes, is General Electric, which “generated $10.3 billion in pretax income, but ended up owing nothing to Uncle Sam. In fact, it recorded a tax benefit of $1.1 billion.” Big Oil giant Exxon Mobil, which last year reported a record $45.2 billion profit, paid the most taxes of any corporation, but none of it went to the IRS… In fact, in 2008, the Government Accountability Office found that “two out of every three United States corporations paid no federal income taxes from 1998 through 2005.”
(thanks, MockPaperScissors!)
